As official custodians of our own patch of the iconic Cleveland Way, it was time for the Baytown team to head out onto the path for a bit of care, up-keep and record keeping, this time on what has been a rare day of sunshine this summer.
Very different to our last Cleveland Way blog where we journaled our St. Valentine's Day walk. Just look at that mud compared to the trail in summer!
Our mission is to preserve the natural beauty of this iconic trail, but it's also a great opportunity to step out of The Roastery, enjoy the views and fresh sea air, and of course brew up outdoors (perhaps our favourite way to enjoy Baytown coffee).
Our patch of the Cleveland Way where we're official environmental stewards, is that between Whitby Abbey and Hawsker Bottoms. We collected our litter pickers and log books and headed out into the sunshine.
View back to Whitby Abbey. Look at that sky!
Key to the job is noting and reporting areas of the path that have fallen into disrepair and need some attention. As everyone will be aware, it's been a spring of wild and wet weather so there are areas where boardwalks are in need of some TLC.
Litter pickers deployed.
Whitby High Lighthouse, beyond Saltwick Bay. Look at that view. Coming out here always makes us appreciate how lucky we are to call this place home. How about a brew?
Brewing up using our classic Stanley Perfect Brew Pour Over and Falcon Enamel Mug. There's really nothing like stopping and pausing with views like this. Your senses are more alive so the coffee takes on a more intense and special experience too.
Coffee of the month for July, we had to be using Coxswain on this walk!
But it's not all about relaxing in the sunshine, coffee in hand, admiring the view! There's litter picking to do. With summer holidays just around the corner, we want to make our patch of the trail completely litter free and safe for all to use.
Another view towards the Abbey around Saltwick Bay. Is this really Yorkshire?!
We returned to The Roastery feeling refreshed, inspired and full of new ideas for the flavours of summer on the coast. Also feeling good that we'd done our small bit for the conservation of this beautiful and delicate stretch of coastline.
We'll try to blog in Autumn on the trail too as it's fascinating to compare our pictures of the same views and the state of the trail through the seasons in this wild and beautiful place.
